About ACA

Also known as "Obamacare," the ACA is a comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010. The ACA has three primary goals:

  1. Make affordable health insurance available to more people: The law provides consumers with subsidies, known as premium tax credits, that lower costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.
  2. Expand the Medicaid program: The ACA aims to cover all adults with income below 138% of the federal poverty level, although not all states have expanded their Medicaid programs.
  3. Support innovative medical care delivery methods: The law is designed to lower the costs of health care generally.

The ACA also includes provisions to prevent insurance companies from denying coverage due to preexisting conditions and created a Health Insurance Marketplace.

Eligibility

To be eligible for health coverage through the ACA, you must meet the following high-level requirements:

  1. Residency: You must live in the United States.
  2. Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawfully present noncitizen in the U.S.
  3. Incarceration Status: You must not be incarcerated.
  4. Medicare Coverage: You must not be covered by Medicare.

Additionally, individuals at all income levels can sign up for health insurance under Obamacare. If you have a household income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL), you may qualify for a premium tax credit, which is a subsidy based on income limits that will reduce the monthly cost of health insurance for you and your family.
